Why we started
In 2023, AI tools exploded — and students were drowning in hype. Every week brought a "revolutionary" new app, half of them useless, most of them confusing. We were students ourselves, wasting hours testing tools that promised the world and delivered very little.
So we started AI For Students with one simple promise: test everything, recommend only what genuinely helps, and always tell the truth — including when a popular tool isn't worth your time. No hype, no jargon, no tool buying its way to the top.
Our only goal: help you find the right AI tool faster, and use it to actually learn — not just cut corners.
How we review
We don't do quick demos. Every tool in our ranking of 15 gets put through real student work before it earns a score:
- We use it for real schoolwork. Actual essays, problem sets, research projects and exam prep — not a five-minute play-around.
- We score what matters to students. Quality of output, ease of use, how generous the free plan is, and — most importantly — how much it actually helps you learn.
- We list the downsides. Every review has a cons section. If a tool isn't worth it, we say so and point you somewhere better.
- We keep reviews fresh. AI changes fast. We re-test and update our reviews as tools release new models and features.
How we stay independent
Running a site costs money. To keep everything free for you, some of our links are affiliate links — meaning if you sign up for a paid plan through us, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Here's our hard rule: affiliate relationships never affect our rankings or scores. We recommend free tools constantly (two of our top picks cost nothing), and we happily criticize tools we earn from. Read our full disclosure and privacy policy.
Who we are
We're a small team of current and recent students across high school and university — the exact people these tools are built for. We've written the essays, panicked before the exams, and pulled the all-nighters. That's the lens we bring to every review.
